The somewhat vague term lyrical abstraction refers to a variety of informal painting that flourished especially in France in the 1940s and 1950s. In contrast to the stricter geometric abstraction, lyrical abstraction offered more freedom and new possibilities of personal expression. The painters did not see themselves as a group of artists and did not follow a uniform programme. Rather, they experimented in individual, spontaneous painting styles, used signs and placed particular emphasis on colour and light.
