Spiral

The civil rights movement of the 1960s gave birth to the Spiral Group, an organization of African American visual artists in New York City. Founded in 1963, the group's goal was to define the role of art and the artists' relationship to the movement. They examined their cultural identity and explored the possibility of defining their own aesthetic.
