Baroque

Baroque is primarily understood as the dominant style of European art between Mannerism and Rococo in the period from about 1600 - 1750. Typical features include lavish, sumptuous decoration and the achievement of theatrical effects through the interplay of architecture, sculpture and painting. The Baroque style originated in Rome and is associated with the Catholic Counter-Reformation as it magnificently expresses the self-confidence and missionary spirit of the revived Catholic Church.
