Lot Details
Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier (French, 1815-1891) Self-portrait, circa 1881-1882 Brown ink on Japanese paper laid on card 7 x 4-5/8 inches (17.8 x 11.7 cm) (sheet) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Christie's East, New York, May 5, 1998, lot 156 (as Attributed to Meissonier, Portrait of a judge); Acquired by the present owner from the above. In a letter to Glaser dated June 5, 1998, scholar Constance Cain Hungerford suggested a date of 1881-1882 for the execution of this work. Additionally, she noted its similarities to another sketch, dated July 14, 1881 (V.C.O. Gréard, Meissonnier: His Life and His Art, New York, 1897, p. 324) and to a watercolor shown at the artist's retrospective held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon in 1993 (catalogue no. 61), suggesting that the present work may be a preparatory drawing for them.
