Giuseppe Passeri (Italian, 1654-1714) Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Matthew, Francis, and John the Baptist, after Annibale Carracci Sanguine on laid paper 15 x 10-7/8 inches (38.1 x 27.6 cm) (sight) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, May 12, 1960, lot 89 (as Italian School, Early 17th Century); Spanierman Gallery, New York (as Giovanni de San Giovanni); Acquired by the present owner from the above, circa 1961. The present work is a highly detailed sketch copied after Annibale Carracci's 1588 altarpiece for the merchant's chapel in the basilica of San Prospero in Reggio Emilia (at one point, it was transferred to the Este collections in Modena, and now resides in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden). Dr. Ann Sutherland Harris put forth the attribution to Passeri in a letter dated July 15, 1980, suggesting it to be an early drawing done while the artist was still a student. Passeri studied under Carlo Maratta, whose own works were informed by the great painters of Parma and Bologna, Carracci among them.
