1856 o.r., verso sig., 27x18,5 cm (BG). The present drawing is dated to the years 1852–1855. During this period, Pissarro lived on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas and in Caracas. The profile view of the boy with a wide-brimmed hat bears similarities to the figure Pissarro depicted in the drawing "Seated Peasant". In the drawing "Varios dibujos de personajes", Pissarro shows a boy holding a similar stick. Along the lower edge of the sheet runs the silhouette of a city, which may represent St. Thomas. Pissarro also depicted the island’s architecture in his ink drawing View of a Military Fortress, held in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
