Attributed to Ludovico Carracci (Italian, 1555-1619) Madonna and Child Ink and wash on paper 4-3/8 x 3-1/4 inches (11.1 x 8.3 cm) (sheet) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Christie's, New York, January 14, 1986, lot 116 (as Attributed to Annibale Carracci); Acquired by the present owner from the above. LITERATURE: A. Sutherland Harris, "Ludovico, Agostino, Annibale...l'abbiam fatta tutti noi," Atti e memorie dell'Accademia Clementina, 33-34, Bologna, 1994, pp. 78-79, fig. 36; B. Bohn, Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing, Turnhout, Belgium, 2004, no. Q32. In a 1994 article, Dr. Harris attributed this drawing to Ludovico Carracci, connecting the sketch to his Cento Madonna of 1591. However, writing in 2004, Bohn praises the handling of drapery and the use of wash, but questions the execution of the faces, fingers, and arms, ultimately suggesting that the work could instead be that of a student.
