Pictures Generation

The name Pictures Generation was subsequently given to a group of American artists who were active in New York in the 1970s and 1980s and were intensively engaged with media culture. It refers to the exhibition "The Pictures Generation, 1974-1984," held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2009. The artists worked in the fields of photography, film, video and performance. They were united by an interest in representational images and references to popular culture and mass media. The aim was to return to recognizable images and explore how the language of images shapes our perception of ourselves and the world.
