New Generation Sculpture

New Generation Sculpture is the name given to a group of British sculptors who experimented with materials, forms and colours in the 1960s and produced a completely new version of abstract sculpture. The name "New Generation" derives from a series of exhibitions in the early 1960s at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, where the young artists, all under the tutelage of Sir Anthony Caro (1924-2013), stood out and established themselves as New Generation Sculpture, an important phenomenon in British art. What they had in common was a preference for simple forms and bold colors, often using non-traditional materials such as fiberglass or plastic.
