AfriCOBRA

AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) was a group of African American artists founded in Chicago in 1968 with the common goal of developing a new artistic visual language based on African and African American approaches. The collective's aesthetic, particularly its use of vibrant color, captured the rhythmic dynamics of black culture and social life. The movement corresponded to the black cultural revolution of the 1960s and sought to build and promote an African American arts community through a self-defined "black aesthetic." AFRICOBRA's work was not individualistic, but focused on collectivity and collaboration.
