Group Origin

Gruppo Origine was a short-lived Italian group of artists founded in 1951. Critical of the increasingly decorative quality of abstract art at the time, the four members called for a clear return to simple forms and colors. The return to basics demanded by the group was expressed through the abandonment of three-dimensional forms and the reduction of color to its simple expressive function. In 1951, the only group exhibition was held at the Galleria Origine in Rome, as the group disbanded that same year. Despite its short existence, the group's approach to abstraction made an important contribution to the development of 1950s art.
