Arte Madí was an interdisciplinary group of artists founded in Buenos Aires in 1946, dedicated to geometric abstraction. The meaning of the group name "Madí" is unclear. It is suspected that it is an invented word. With their quest for a universal art encompassing music, dance, poetry and architecture, the group formed a seminal episode in the history of Argentine art. An essential subject of the Madí artists' reflections was the preoccupation with the question of the frame or, more broadly, the edge of a picture support, whereupon they painted on irregularly shaped canvases and experimented with three-dimensional objects.
