In 1955, four Canadian abstract painters formed the artist group Les Plasticiens in Montréal. In response to the enthusiasm for spontaneous automatism, they proclaimed in their manifesto the need to return to a controlled, ordered form of painting. Their style was strictly devoted to geometric abstraction with a particular focus on the arrangement of plastic elements.
