In 1961, the artists' group Continuità was formed in Rome, whose name has a twofold meaning in the exposition of its aims: on the one hand, the artists resisted the looseness of Informel and sought instead to create a modern Italian art that would re-establish a continuity with the great art of their country's past. On the other hand, they strove for continuity and structural rigour within a work of art.
