Group of Seven

Dissatisfied with the conservative painting of their time, the first major national art movement in Canada formed in 1920 with the aim of developing an innovative, independent Canadian art. The Group of Seven is known for its landscape paintings inspired by Canadian nature, in which human presence is rare or non-existent. Stylistically, the painters were oriented towards the often daring colourfulness and radical simplification of form of European art movements.
