Neósok / Neos

The so-called "Neos" are a grouping within the Nagybánya school that formed from 1906 onwards under the influence of the artist Béla Czóbel, who joined the Fauvists in Paris and spread this new style within the artists' colony. The new tendencies led to disagreements within the group, so that the Neos turned away from realistic and impressionist open-air painting to experiment with the new styles, such as Fauvism and Expressionism. The rural village of Nagybánya had already become the centre of the Hungarian avant-garde in the years before.
