The German Artists' Association

The Deutscher Künstlerbund was an alliance of artists, art critics and art lovers founded in 1903, who came together in rejection of the conservative guidelines of the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft. The members wanted to break out of the strict institutional framework that did not allow a progressive modern view of art. No particular artistic direction was to be disseminated; rather, the goals lay in a free exhibition policy and the associated possibility of obtaining commissions without state paternalism.
