The Nul Group, the most important Dutch artist group of the post-war period, which received its name in 1961, was already preceded by the "Dutch Informal Group" from 1958. The name, similar to the ZERO group, stands for a radical new beginning in art. The Nul group gradually broke away from Informel painting, but did not represent a uniform style, but experimented between colourless, monochrome works practically without form or composition and the renunciation of the flat surface in combination with the use of industrial materials.
