One of the main concerns of Abstract Expressionism was the complete dissociation from everything that already existed. The multifaceted art movement emerged in the 1940s in the USA, especially in New York, and brought a completely spontaneous, gestural painting into the monumental format. The creative process itself became the central aspect of the artwork.
