The name of the Düsseldorf artists' group dates back to its founding in 1953. The purpose of the formation was the joint organisation of exhibitions and other cultural events in order to make contemporary art accessible to a broader public. Stylistically, Group 53 moved within the gestural expressive painting of the Informel, in a collective departure from geometric abstraction.
