Nabis

The Nabis are a French group of artists that formed in Paris in 1888 around Paul Sérusier (1864-1927) with the aim of initiating a renewal of art. The choice of the Hebrew word for "prophets" as the group's name implies the view of art as religious revelation, albeit with an ironic undertone. The very different works of the Nabis were particularly inspired by Paul Gaugin (1848-1903) in terms of landscape design, and primary importance was attributed by the artists' association to colour, symbol, feelings and fantasy.
