High Baroque

The Baroque style reached its peak between about 1630/50 - 1700, the so-called High Baroque. On the one hand, the Baroque was appropriated by the Catholic Church for the glorification of the faith and the representation of the power of the papacy; on the other hand, it staged a glorifying image of the rulers during absolutism. The strongest expression of Baroque art was found in lavishly decorated architecture, which also included the genres of painting and sculpture in the sense of the Gesamtkunstwerk.
