Frankenthal Group of Painters

The Frankenthal painters were a group of Flemish artists who, due to the persecution of the Protestants, settled in Frankenthal in the Palatinate and founded their own school of painting there from 1562. They devoted themselves primarily to the subject of landscape, with a particular focus on small-format depictions of forests, which often became the setting for mythological or biblical scenes.
