Soft Style / International Gothic

The Soft Style, or International Gothic, is a style of late Gothic painting and sculpture that flourished north of the Alps in the early 15th century and marked the end of the Gothic period and the transition to the Renaissance. Characteristic of the Soft Style are graceful figures of the Virgin Mary, the so-called "beautiful Madonnas", which broke away from the previous rigidity prevalent in art and radiated a new agility and liveliness.
