Naive Art / Naïve Art

Events at the turn of the 20th century led to a rebellion against classical painting and initiated a preference for all things "anti-classical" and a turn to the aesthetics of other worlds, including Naive Art. Naive art refers to the art-making of artists who did not receive professional training at an art school or academy and who acquired the technique of painting autodidactically. Naive art, characterized by its spontaneity and simplicity, first gained notoriety through its discovery by avant-garde artists and art critics at the end of the 19th century, and many unskilled painters gained an honorable place in the modern art world.
