Orientalism

Orientalism in art is not understood as a style, but rather as the very popular exploration of the broad range of themes of the Orient in European painting throughout the 19th century. Artists from a variety of backgrounds portrayed their Western vision of North African, Turkish, and Arab cultures considered exotic, which they took from observed scenes while traveling or entirely from their imagination. Many painters created their own Orient based on photographs, travelogues, or stories. They were fascinated by the vastness and incredible light of the desert, attracted by the colors of a foreign culture that seemed so mysterious.
