Lowbrow Art / Pop Surrealism

Lowbrow art refers to an underground visual art movement that originated in Los Angeles in the late 1970s. The influences of the popular lowbrow movement are diverse: the often self-taught artists were inspired by classic cartoons and comics, punk music, horror films, science fiction, anime, surf cultures, graffiti and many other subcultural offerings. In the areas of painting, graphics and media art, creative and detailed works with integrated motifs from pop culture are produced, which always contain a distinct degree of humor. Lowbrow is often equated with the term pop surrealism. Since it is a young art movement, there is still no agreement on the exact definition of the two terms.
