Neo-Expressionism

The neo-expressionist trend in painting first emerged in Berlin from the 1960s onwards. The unifying basic elements of a very versatile movement can be named as the return to representational painting, the use of a symbolic pictorial language and the use of expressive colours. Neo-Expressionism reached a second peak in the 1980s, when the Expressionist style established itself as the predominant direction of painting in Germany, Italy and the USA.
