The U.S. American Berenice Abbott achieved international fame as a pioneering exponent of factual and social documentary photography. Abbott was born on July 17, 1898 in Springfield, Ohio. In 1917/18, she studied journalism at Ohio State University and at Columbia University in New York. In 1918, Berenice Abbott switched to studying painting and sculpture in New York, where she also met Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, who were experimenting with new art forms in New York at the time.
