Henri Matisse

December 31, 1869 Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France - November 03, 1954 Nice, France
The French painter Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, a small town in northern France. He initially became a lawyer, but he found painting much more desirable and liberating, which is why he began taking drawing lessons in 1890. In 1891 Henri Matisse went to Paris, and the path to art was not an easy one for him. He was rejected twice at the École des Beaux-Arts before a third attempt in 1895 was successful. In the meantime, he attended evening classes at the École des Arts Décoratifs, was a guest student in Gustave Moreau's studio, studied with Antoine Bourdelle, attended the private academies that were common at the time, and was able to exhibit his first works in the salons. Financially, he is dependent on the support of his parents.
