Yoshitomo Nara 奈良美智

December 05, 1959
Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara was born in Hirosaki on December 5, 1959. Yoshitomo Nara grows up in the countryside as the son of a working couple and, looking back on his childhood, says: "Loneliness and a sense of alienation led me to art." He studies at the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music from 1987 and moves to Germany in 1988, where he continues his art studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf until 1993. From 1994 Yoshitomo Nara lives in Cologne. In 1998 he has his first teaching position for painting at the University of California in Los Angeles. Together with Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara is one of the most influential and successful contemporary artists of Japanese neo-pop and superflat art, which combines the dominance of Western pop culture after the Second World War, which is perceived as oppressive, with Japanese tradition and makes it a theme.
