Carrie Mae Weems Golden Yella Girl (from the "Colored People" series) circa 1989 Toned gelatin silver print 15-1/8 x 14-3/4 inches (38.4 x 37.5 cm) (image, sight) AP 1/2 Signed and inscribed in pencil, verso: "For my great friend, Jeanette [sic] / whose continued love and support / sustains me and makes me whole" / Carrie M. Weems PROVENANCE: P.P.O.W., New York. Though purchased through P.P.O.W., the present lot was a custom variation on Weems' Burnt Orange Girl that the artist printed specifically for Jenette Kahn, who remembers Weems saying at the time, "I knew that yellow would look much better in your dining room."
