Julius Stockfleth (German/American, 1857-1935) Gathering Flowers Oil on paper laid on board 11-3/4 x 9-1/2 inches (29.8 x 24.1 cm) Signed and inscribed lower right: J. Stockfleth. Gal. Property from the collection of John L. Nau, III, Houston PROVENANCE: Alfred Muller, Galveston; By descent from above, circa 1896; Harry Halff Fine Art, San Antonio; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Julius Stockfleth immigrated to the United States in 1883 and settled in Galveston, Texas, two years later. He spent two decades in Texas, producing a valuable record of early Galveston. Gathering Flowers was owned by renowned Galveston architect of local landmarks such as Galveston City Hall. Alfred Muller, prior to 1896, which is when Muller passed away, and the painting passed to his heirs. Like Stockfleth’s other paintings, Gathering Flowers is naive in style, but possesses bright and clear detail. In 1907, he returned to Germany where he lived out his life.
