Carl Hoppe was a student of José Arpa who began painting en plein air with Arpa in Bandera in 1926. He continued to paint central and south Texas landscapes after his mentor returned to Spain. A very prolific artist, Hoppe became an important member of the Coppini Academy in San Antonio, exhibiting annually with that group through the 1950s and 1960s.
