Lot Details
Emile Antoine Bourdelle (French, 1861-1929) Study of Isadora Duncan Ink on paper 8-1/4 x 5-1/4 inches (21.0 x 13.3 cm) (sheet) Signed and titled lower left: Isadora Duncan / de Antoine Bourdelle Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Christie's, New York, January 24, 2006, lot 131; Acquired by the present owner from the above. This sketch of legendary dancer Isadora Duncan was created as a study for a frieze in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris. A daring group of artists turned the theater into a masterpiece of collaborative design: lights developed by René Lalique, architecture by Van de Velde and the Perret Brothers, and extensive decoration by painters Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. Bourdelle's work enjoyed particular prominence: the sculptor carved Duncan and others in bas-relief on the building's very façade.
