Claude Joseph Vernet (French, 1714-1789) Naples, vue du Château de l'Oeuf Black chalk and brown ink on laid paper 9-3/8 x 13-5/8 inches (23.8 x 34.6 cm) (sheet) Signed lower left and titled lower right: J. Vernet / Naples, vue du Chat. de l'oeuf. Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Christie's, New York, January 13, 1987, lot 114; Acquired by the present owner from the above. This deceptively elaborate study exemplifies Vernet's close observation of his beloved Naples; particular care has been taken to delicately sketch the crumbling grandeur of the city as viewed from the artist's perch near the Château de l'Oeuf. This vantage point is echoed in several of Vernet's finished works on canvas, including View of Naples with Vesuvius and View of the Bay of Naples, both in the collections of the Louvre (inventory nos. RF 1976 21 and R 1949 8, respectively) and Naples, a view of the Bay from the North, in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick Castle.
