Lot Details
Attributed to Francesco Sabatelli (Italian, 1803-1829) Reclining infant Ink on laid paper 8-1/4 x 11-1/8 inches (21.0 x 28.3 cm) (sheet) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: (Probably) Savoy Art & Auction Galleries, New York, December 3, 1960; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Professor Roberta J.M. Olson of Wheaton College examined images of this work and proposed an attribution to Francesco Sabatelli, rather than his father, Luigi (1772-1850). In a letter dated November 10, 1997, she remarked that the reworked contours of the hand, arm, and face are certainly characteristic of Luigi's draftsmanship, as is the specific type of cross-hatching, but stressed that Francesco worked in a very similar style to his father, albeit on a smaller scale. After conducting additional research on the drawing, Professor Olson concluded, in a letter of July 8, 1998, that the influence of Luigi is clear, but the looser penmanship visible in this example more closely resembles that of Francesco.
