Frank Xavier Leyendecker (American, 1877-1924) Styles for Men, The House of Kuppenheimer booklet cover, 1911-12 Oil on canvas 21-3/4 x 18 inches (55.2 x 45.7 cm) Signed lower right: Frank X. Leyendecker Property from the Collection of a Distinguished Academic Woman PROVENANCE: Judy Goffman, New York; Private collection. LITERATURE: The House of Kuppenheimer, "Styles for Men" Fall and Winter, catalogue, 1911-12, cover, illustrated. Frank Xavier Leyendecker, an accomplished illustrator in his own right, contributed significantly to the visual arts landscape of the early 20th century, albeit often overshadowed by his more renowned brother, J.C. Leyendecker. F.X.'s relationship with the House of Kuppenheimer, a pivotal moment in his career, highlighted his exceptional ability to blend elegance and style in men's fashion illustration. While J.C.'s work for Kuppenheimer and The Saturday Evening Post is widely celebrated for defining American masculinity and style, F.X. brought a distinctive flair and sophistication to his illustrations, embodying the sartorial elegance that the brand sought to project. Their collaboration with Kuppenheimer not only marked a significant contribution to the advertising world but also showcased the Leyendecker brothers' influence on the artistic portrayal of early 20th-century American manhood. In this context, F.X. Leyendecker's work, though less prevalent, remains an integral part of the Leyendecker legacy, offering a nuanced perspective on the era's visual and cultural narratives. While not a limited edition print itself, Styles for Men also closely relates to limited edition prints distributed by Collier's. Most notably, the painting shares identical models and costumes with those prints (fig. 1). HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
