Lot Details
Vivian Maier (American, 1926-2009) Playdate, circa 1950s Gelatin silver print 10-1/2 x 11-5/8 inches (26.7 x 29.5 cm) (image) 11 x 14 inches (sheet) From the Ron Slattery collection Playdate gives the viewer a glimpse into how Maier injected her photography into all aspects of her life. The image shows two children, one delightedly hamming for the camera, and the other hiding their face from Maier's insistent lens. The work is a rare example of Vivian Maier's large format photography. Fewer than 300 exhibition sized prints such as this are known to exist, and they stand as powerful evidence of her artistry and of how she chose to present her work in her lifetime. While it's estimated that Vivian Maier took upwards of 100,000 photos, the vast majority of her work surfaced as negatives, making all vintage prints exceedingly rare, and the 20 large format offerings in this sale remarkable finds. Overall very good condition. Sheet curls at the side edges. Some hard creasing in the margins, not extending into the image. Some crazing in the image. Bumping in the corners. Sheet is loose, not framed.
