Prudence Cuming (British, 20th century) R. B. Kitaj, October 1976 Gelatin silver print 9-3/8 x 7-3/8 inches (23.7 x 18.7 cm) (image) 9-5/8 x 7-5/8 inches (sheet) Titled, dated in pencil, and with the photographer's studio stamp, verso. From the collection of Milton Esterow Ronald Brooks Kitaj (American, 1932–2007), usually known as R. B. Kitaj, was a painter and printmaker whose work brought together literature, history, and personal experience. Spending much of his career in Britain, he developed a distinctive figurative style, combining expressive drawing, vivid color, and fragmented compositions that often resemble collages. His pictures invite viewers to piece together connections between people, places, and ideas, with Jewish identity and the experience of displacement becoming increasingly important themes. Associated with the "School of London," Kitaj championed the human figure at a time when abstraction dominated much of the art world, creating work that is both intellectually engaging and deeply personal.
