From the collection of Milton Esterow Lester Johnson (1919-2010) was one of the leading exponents of Figurative Expressionism. The movement, which included artists in New York, Provincetown, Chicago and San Francisco emerged in response to the non objective aspects of Abstract Expressionism. While it flourished during the late 1950s and early 1960s it coincided with, and was overshadowed by, Pop art.
