Lot Details
Woodcut.
Prasse W 188. Signed. On delicate Japon. 25.5 x 30.2 cm. Sheet 35,6 x 43,2 cm.
Rare. Prasse does not mention a print run, but only trial proofs on different papers. [AR].
- In the year the work was made, Feininger was appointed to the Bauhaus in Weimar by Walter Gropius. - Between 1918 and 1920, he created a comprehensive graphic oeuvre that would earn Feininger a reputation as one of the most important printmakers of the 20th century. - The Thuringian village inspired him to create several works, including two paintings. - Another copy is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
LITERATURE: Kastern Kunst & Auktionen, Hanover, 110th art auction, 2nd part, December 4, 2004, lot 491.
Private collection Northern Germany
In good condition. White margins with slight handling- and crease marks as well as with isolated brownish stains, partly from an old mounting. Tiny brown spots also in the image. The sheet margins slightly irregularly trimmed and with isolated small losses, probably partly owing to the paper production.
