- In the year the work was made, Feininger was appointed to the Bauhaus in Weimar by Walter Gropius. - Between 1918 and 1920, he created a comprehensive graphic oeuvre that would earn Feininger a reputation as one of the most important printmakers of the 20th century. - The Thuringian village inspired him to create several works, including two paintings. - Another copy is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
