Grasse S. 159. Lower right monogrammed. Titled on a label on the reverse. 90.3 x 73.8 cm. . [CH].
- Large-format, impressive frontal depiction. - Religious themes can be found throughout Werner Scholz's entire oeuvre. - Fateful years around 1940: in 1937, some of the artist's works were shown in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition and Scholz was banned from exhibiting; in 1944, his studio and many works were destroyed in an air raid.
LITERATURE: Claudia Grasse (ed.), Werner Scholz 1898-1982. Werkkatalog zum 100. Geburtstag, Alpbach 1998, p. 159 (not illustrated).
Kunsthandel Fischer, Berlin. Private collection Lower Saxony (acquired from the above)
Large-format work in good condition. Partially worked quite impasto. Individual small professional retouches, somewhat more extensive in the margins and in the upper right area of the image. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the help of an ultraviolet light and to the best of knowledge.
