Harwood Knox Smith was a distinguished Texas architect and accomplished watercolor artist whose legacy left a lasting mark on the built environment and cultural landscape of the state. After graduating from Texas A&M in 1935 with a degree in architecture, he founded Harwood K. Smith and Partners in Dallas, which grew into HKS Architects, one of the largest architectural firms in the United States. His firm was responsible for iconic projects such as Reunion Arena, Scottish Rite Hospital, and the School of Architecture at Texas A&M. Smith was honored with the Dallas AIA Lifetime Achievement Award and the AIA Presidential Citation. Smith was also a recognized member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. His deep commitment to community service, education, and the arts reflected a life devoted to creativity, leadership, and civic engagement in Texas and beyond.
