Nanette and Ernesto Klun, Dallas, Texas, acquired in France; Private collection, Bigfork, Montana, by descent from the above.
Charles Louis Bazin (French, 1802-1859) Napoleon I as Emperor, after François Gérard, 1846 Oil on canvas 31-1/4 x 25-1/4 inches (79.4 x 64.1 cm) (oval) Signed, dated, and inscribed center left: Ch. Bazin / d'après F. Gérard / 1846 PROVENANCE: Nanette and Ernesto Klun, Dallas, Texas, acquired in France; Private collection, Bigfork, Montana, by descent from the above. The present work is a faithful, detailed, bust-length copy of Baron François Gérard's full-length portrait of Napoleon I in his coronation robes. Gérard's 1805 original currently resides in the Palace of Versailles. In his copy, Charles Louis Bazin, a student of Gérard, focused on all the calculated trappings of Napoleon's famous power portrait: his piercing gaze, the texture of the enveloping ermine, the gold and diamond-studded chain of eagles that forms the necklace of the Légion d'Honneur, and the crown of golden laurel leaves. Unlined canvas with Maison Lentaigne supplier's mark on the reverse. Minor buckling to canvas visible near edges under raking light. A faint horizontal stretcher bar mark visible near center of left edge under raking light. Some scattered instances of mild frame abrasion. Yellowing to the varnish layer in some areas. Some abrasion to the paint layer along the sitter's hairline. A few additional scattered small dots of surface abrasion and discolored accretion. Remnants of an old sticker and wax seal at center of lower edge. Under UV: heavily applied varnish fluoresces green unevenly and appears to have been removed in some areas. Brushy retouching at edges and in background. A few additional, more finely applied dots and dashes of retouching to the background in upper left quadrant. Finely applied strengthening to some details of the figure's costume and laurel crown. A very few faint pinpoint dots of retouching to the figure's lips and the hollows of his proper left cheek. Framed Dimensions 41.5 X 35.5 X 4 Inches
