Condition
Sone dated in pencil, verso. Some with stamps, verso.
Vivian Maier (American, 1926-2009) Gravediggers, Sailors, and Other Men at Work (15 works), circa 1950 Gelatin silver prints 3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches (8.9 x 6.4 cm) and slightly smaller (sheets) Sone dated in pencil by the photographer, verso. Some with stamps, verso. From the Ron Slattery collection The photographs in this lot largely date to Vivian Maier's 1950 travels abroad to the rural French village from where her family emigrated to America and the surrounding region. They are examples of her earliest known work. Already they show her dedication to her craft and her quickly growing confidence behind the camera. She fearlessly captured action shots of sailors, and turned her camera onto men caught sleeping on the job, farm workers, even gravediggers. According to biographer Pamela Bannos, Maier was so insistent with her camera on her 1950 trip that some people in her family's French village thought she might be a spy, and she ended up being questioned by the police about her photography. Overall very good condition. Some sheets with some toning. Some scattered creasing, mostly localized to the margins. All sheets are loose, not framed.
