In 1946, Curt Valentin commissioned Max Beckmann to create the portfolio "Day and Dream" especially for the American market. The subject had become relevant, not least due to the popularity of the Surrealists. At the request of the publisher Curt Valentin, Max Beckmann watercolored four portfolios of the 1948 edition, including the portfolio with copy number 18, which Max Beckmann repeatedly mentions in his diaries. The important aspect is that all four portfolios differ in terms of choice of watercolors, which means that each sheet was given an own interpretation and personal character. The Max Ernst Museum in Brühl showed the exhibition "MAX BECKMANN - Day and Dream. Eine Reise von Berlin nach New York" from September 27, 2020 to February 28, 2021.
