Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808) Rustic mill scene in Naples, 1760s Sanguine on laid paper 12-5/8 x 17-5/8 inches (32.1 x 44.8 cm) (sheet) Signed and partially dated lower right: Robert / 176[0] Titled lower center: Napoli PROVENANCE: Private collection, Paris; Private collection, Mabank, Texas, by descent from the above, 1988. Sarah Catala has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this drawing on the basis of high-resolution images. She notes that while the drawing is unpublished, it should be included in the series of red chalk drawings that Hubert Robert produced "sur le motif" during his stay in and around Naples from April to June 1760, in the company of the Abbé de Saint-Non. Robert was as interested in famous sites as he was in places depicting everyday life in Campania. The lot is accompanied by Dr. Catala's letter of authenticity, dated March 28, 2024. Presents very well. Two small dots of darkened accretion in right side of work. A few additional scattered small dots of more faint discoloration and foxing. Sheet is laid on secondary card decorated with a tromp-l'oeil French mat, preventing inspection of sheet verso. Secondary card bears customs stamp on the reverse, "Douanes françaises / A.T. / Paris / Batignolles." Framed under glass. Framed Dimensions 18.75 X 23 X 1.5 Inches
