Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) The Descent from the Cross: Second Plate, 1633 Etching and engraving on laid paper 21 x 16-1/8 inches (53.3 x 41.0 cm) (plate) 21-5/8 x 16-3/4 (sheet) Signed, dated, and inscribed in the plate, lower center: Rembrandt. f. cum pryvl 1633 New Hollstein's sixth state (of 8) PROVENANCE: California Fine Arts Gallery, Boca Raton, Florida; Private collection, Florida, acquired from the above, 1999; Thence by descent. LITERATURE: New Hollstein, 119. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
A lovely impression laid paper adhered to a secondary support sheet. A possible watermark between the right most figure and the structure on the right. Two extremely small (1/4" or less) tears along lower edge of sheet, one which appears to only extend through the upper most layer of the sheet with some slight delamination from the secondary support. Moderate toning to sheet with some foxing, consistent with the age of the work. A few small areas of skinning within the printed image; do not appear overly impactful to image, largest spot is located in the background trees just to the right of the central figures. Some small repaired areas evident along lower edge and at the left upper and lower corners, other areas primarily present in background. Mild creasing evident throughout sheet, though sheet appears flat and stable. Previous/removed hinging evident along verso upper edge with some remnants and light, localized areas of skinning. Scattered, mild surface accretions, primarily evident on verso. Hinged along all edges, matted, and framed under acrylic. Framed dimensions 27 x 22 inches.
