Erich Schleier saw this drawing as a preparatory study for the altarpiece that Alessandro Turchi made around 1619-1620 for the Cappella degli Innocenti in the church of Santo Stefano in Verona.

The current attribution goes back to Erich Schleier and Davide Dossi, Cologne.
